About Gay

Having a passion for my job is one of my favorite things in life.  I simply love architecture and buildings.  You start with an idea, or maybe a dream, and turn it into a physical form you live and breathe.

I earned a Master of Architecture at Catholic University in 2003, specializing immediately in sustainable design and becoming a LEED Certified Professional.  I spent the early part of my architecture career designing and drawing large commercial buildings with multiple uses and in various stages at Cooper Carry Inc.  At the firm, I also took leadership roles in the LEED and sustainable design initiatives and projects.  Prior to practicing architecture, I earned an MBA at Georgetown University and worked on environmental development projects and green businesses for ten years.

Today, I’m licensed to practice architecture in DC and Maryland and focus my practices on residential architecture and sustainable design consulting.

Sustainable Design, 10 years in environmental work before architecture, 10 years of sustainable architecture. LEED AP, AIA (licensed in MD, DC). I’ve done one LEED platinum house, three LEED gold office spaces, HERS (energy rating – actually getting accredited now to perform them myself). Can do any level of design from affordable idea sketches, brainstorming, consulting, full on permit drawings, model building, etc. Whatever helps the client visualize what their space could be. Believe Hill houses are all about maximizing the use of every niche – whether that’s to provide storage or an open line of sight to the back yard.

Pricing: don’t like the model of % of construction (an unconscious incentive to not worry about construction costs and doesn’t reflect the true value provided). Charge by the hour or a set fee based on an estimation of the time it will take to complete a task. I like transparency so the client can really see what they are buying.

Know Hill houses inside and out – been here 15 years, lived in 5 of them, gutted and rehabed a bunch, done more bathroom renovations than I want to remember, love blending historic with contemporary. Love row houses as a form – incredibly adaptable, built to last, beautiful quirks, and opportunities galore.

MBA – I work a lot with spreadsheets. From programming, SF analysis, specifications, and budgeting. I like organization and try to keep projects really simple for clients through that organization. Also, I like figuring out payback periods, investment risks, where the bang for the buck is, etc.
